Expert Treatment for TMJ Issues

At The TMJ Sleep Center, we specialize in finding solutions to our patients’ temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Our friendly compassionate, and knowledgeable staff work hard to help you find relief from the pain, discomfort, and inconvenience associated with your condition.

Your jaw’s hinge joint joins your skull’s bones to your jaw, enabling you to chew food, swallow, kiss, sing, and speak. It is one of the most frequently utilized joints in the body, and like the knee, it has cartilage and meniscus, which serve as shock absorbers for the bones.

TMJ symptoms include debilitating headaches, ear problems, jaw cracking, and neck pain that disrupt daily life. TMJ may be linked to problems with the jaws, ligaments, or muscles for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Accident, trauma, or neck or jaw injury (whiplash)
  • Inflammation related to some medical diseases
  • Head position, stress, and jaw- and teeth-grinding
  • Arthritis

Bone damage, facial changes, a locked jaw, changing bite, and difficulty chewing are some of the most severe TMJ problems. Jaw popping and clicking occur when the meniscus shifts out of place, which causes nerve compression and bone deterioration.

TMJ Treatment Options

Our team creates tailored TMJ pain treatment plans for patients using the most recent diagnostic tools and evaluation procedures. We provide a thorough approach for chronic TMJ pain treatment, employing a range of techniques to correct jaw muscle and joint abnormalities, ultimately eradicating pain and hastening the healing process.

Treatment options include:

Orthotic Treatment

In order to maintain a relaxed jaw position and stop the nerves from overfiring, which in turn prevents muscle spasms, this treatment method uses a specially crafted dental device. The patient can sleep soundly with the little acrylic appliance in place without worrying about additional tooth damage due to teeth grinding.

Ultrasound

By using ultrasound waves to dislodge adhesions and scar tissue in deeper muscle and tissue layers, this treatment can alleviate TMJ pain. Heat is another byproduct of ultrasound energy, which allows the damaged area’s blood flow to be restored.

Microcurrents

By producing a little electrical current, this TMJ therapy encourages the body to produce ATP, a high-energy molecule, in the afflicted area. By releasing lactic acid and calming the muscles, ATP helps to relieve localized discomfort.

Low-Level Lasers

In order to stimulate ATP generation in the muscles and nerves in the troubled area, this non-heat laser treatment method is used. Once more, ATP relaxes the muscle tissue, promoting blood flow, lowering pain and inflammation, and shortening the time it takes for the muscles and joint tissues in the area to heal. A pain-inhibiting reaction is brought on by the laser's additional transmission of a signal across the nerve to the brain stem.

Botox Therapy

The jaw muscles are momentarily relaxed after receiving a Botox injection, which eases stress and discomfort. Our facility is a convenient location for Botox injections, which only take a little while to give. The injections often have results that persist between three and six months.

TMJ pain alleviation without surgery is a solution in some minor situations. The following methods can help you manage symptoms and reduce TMJ pain without surgery:

Keep your jaw resting: Reduce wide jaw motions like chewing, yawning, singing, and yelling to aid with TMJ pain. Try your best to maintain the most relaxed state of your muscles.

Ensure proper posture: Long periods of time spent sitting in an uncomfortable position can make your jaw pain worse.

Sleep: Many facets of good health depend on sleep. Use pillows to support your neck when you sleep on your back to help reduce TMJ pain. Avoid sleeping on your stomach and avoid putting your hand on your jaw if you choose to do so while on your side.

Use a compress, either hot or cold: Heat can relax your jaw muscles and enhance blood flow while ice helps to minimize swelling and soreness. Use a thin layer of skin between the compress and your jaw when applying a hot or cold compress for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

Lower stress: To assist your jaw in relaxing and loosening up, try to stress less.
